WhatsApp’s New Privacy Feature Blocks Media Downloads & Chat Exports
WhatsApp, Meta’s popular messaging app, is reportedly developing a new privacy feature that will give users greater control over their shared media and conversations. As revealed by WABetaInfo, the upcoming "advanced chat privacy" setting will allow users to block recipients from saving images and videos from a chat onto their devices.
This feature functions similarly to Disappearing Messages, where media can only be viewed but not downloaded. Additionally, it will restrict the ability to export chat histories—a function currently available on WhatsApp. If a user enables this setting, others in the chat won’t be able to export the conversation or use Meta AI features within it.
While this update enhances security—particularly for sensitive discussions—it does come with limitations. For instance, once activated, participants in the chat will lose access to certain AI-powered tools. However, the feature remains optional, allowing users to enable it selectively for specific conversations.
Since the feature is still in early development, its public release could take weeks or even months. Once rolled out, it will provide an extra layer of protection against unauthorized sharing of private chats.
