YouTube Implements Transparency Measures For AI-Generated Content Disclosure
Amidst the proliferation of generative AI , discerning the authenticity of images and videos on video-sharing platforms such as YouTube has become increasingly challenging.
In a bid to counter misinformation and foster transparency regarding content authenticity , YouTube has implemented a policy requiring creators to disclose the use of generative AI in their media production. This initiative is accompanied by the introduction of a new tool in Creator Studio aimed at facilitating content creators in making such disclosures. The tool assists creators in flagging content that is "unrealistic, animated, includes special effects, or has used generative AI for production assistance."
According to a blog post by YouTube, these disclosures will now be visibly appended as labels within the expanded video descriptions. Notably, on sensitive topics like news, elections, finance, or health, these labels will be prominently displayed directly on the video itself. Creators are mandated to disclose the use of AI-generated media in scenarios where the video features the likeness of a real person, manipulated footage of actual events or locales, or exhibits realistic-looking scenes crafted using AI-powered tools.
However, this disclosure requirement does not encompass all forms of AI-modified or generated content. For instance, if creators utilize AI for tasks aimed at enhancing productivity, such as scriptwriting, captioning, color correction, or applying filters and special effects, they are exempted from using the disclosure label.
In instances where a creator fails to disclose the presence of altered or synthetic content within a video, YouTube reserves the right to automatically apply a disclosure label, particularly if the content "has the potential to confuse or mislead people." Initially, these labels will be visible exclusively on the YouTube app, with plans for expansion to the website and TV app in the imminent weeks.
