In an announcement video, YouTube highlighted that the update emphasises an immersive layout and streamlined access to subscription features, aiming to cater to evolving viewer preferences. According to the platform, the redesign is a response to the increasing demand for consolidated viewing experiences on TV screens.

The motivation behind the redesign stems from the platform's analysis, revealing a remarkable 400% growth in the past three years among top creators whose primary viewership comes from TVs.

Neal Mohan, CEO of YouTube, emphasised the shift in viewer behaviour, stating, “Viewers want everything in one place, from a live sports game to the BBC to Khan Academy and NikkieTutorials. And they’re watching YouTube the way we used to sit down together for traditional TV shows — on the biggest screen in the home with friends and family.”

The rise of YouTube Shorts on connected TVs has been notable, with views surging by over 100% from January to September 2023. Globally, viewers are now consuming more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content daily on their TV screens, underlining the platform's increasing dominance in the streaming landscape.

Nielsen, renowned for insights, data, and analytics, has reaffirmed YouTube's position as the leading streaming platform in the US by watch time for a consecutive full year.
