YouTube's Latest Report Reveals Massive Video Purge: Over 2.25 Million Videos Removed In India Alone
YouTube 's recent release of its Community Guidelines Enforcement report has unveiled staggering figures, especially concerning content removal in India . Between October and December of the previous year, the platform took down an astonishing 2.25 million videos in India alone for breaching its regulations, securing India's position at the apex of non-compliance.
Globally, YouTube executed the removal of over 9 million videos in the last quarter of 2023. Impressively, more than 96% of these deletions were initiated by machine detection rather than human intervention. Remarkably, over half of the videos identified by machines were removed before garnering a single view, while an additional 27% received between 1 and 10 views before being eliminated.
Moreover, YouTube did not hesitate to ban entire channels , terminating over 20 million of them in the last quarter, predominantly due to spam-related infractions such as scams, misleading metadata, or comment spam. Notably, YouTube's automated filters intercepted a staggering 1.1 billion comments, resulting in their removal.
Regarding the nature of the content removed, the usual categories topped the list: harmful or dangerous content accounted for 39.2% of removals, followed by child safety issues at 32.4%, and violent or graphic material at 7.5%. Following India, other countries with significant content removals included Singapore, the US, Indonesia, and Russia.
The substantial surge in content takedowns in India is particularly noteworthy given the imminent general election. Google has been striving to prioritise trustworthy voting information from credible sources across its platforms. However, the significant influx of dubious content being uploaded underscores the ongoing battle against misinformation.
