100% Tariffs On India?: US House Advances Bill Enabling Trump To Target Top Russian Oil Buyers

The US House of Representatives has moved a bill imposing potential 100 per cent tariffs on India and four other countries to a final vote. The legislation, approved by a 214-211 vote, targets countries buying Russian oil and gas and seeks to give President Donald Trump the power to impose tariffs on their goods. The bill lists India, China, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovakia as major buyers of Russian energy. It also extends the Iran Sanctions Act until 2031 and proposes sanctions on Russian leaders, officials, oligarchs and financial institutions. Republican Rep. Michael McCaul said India could be removed from the list if it changes its behaviour in good faith. India has maintained that its Russian oil purchases are guided by national interest, availability and global oil prices. MEA also called India-Russia energy cooperation an important pillar of bilateral ties.
