BRICS Refuses To Abandon Fossil Fuels Despite Clean Energy Push, Opposes EU Carbon Tax

BRICS has acknowledged that fossil fuels will continue to play an important role in the global energy mix, particularly for emerging markets and developing economies. The position was outlined in the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit. The bloc reaffirmed its commitment to climate action and the Paris Agreement while calling for just, orderly, equitable and inclusive energy transitions. It also urged developed countries to provide financial resources and technology to developing nations for climate adaptation. With India, China, Indonesia and Russia among the world’s largest coal consumers, BRICS highlighted the importance of balancing energy security with cleaner energy goals. The declaration also recognised critical minerals as important for low-emission technologies and opposed the European Union’s carbon border tax.
