India Completes Dedicated Freight Corridor Network After 20 Years As PM Modi Launches 3 New Sections

Nearly two decades after the project was approved, India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor network is now fully operational. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated the three remaining sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, completing the 1,506-km WDFC. Combined with the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, India now has a 2,843-km dedicated freight network. The WDFC connects Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with JNPT near Mumbai and is designed for electric double-stack container operations. High-rise overhead wires allow two containers to be carried one above the other on freight trains. The dedicated network is expected to move goods faster, support more cargo per train, reduce logistics costs and free up conventional railway tracks for additional passenger and freight services.
