India Responds as US Russia Sanctions Bill Reaches Trump: What It Means for Delhi’s Oil Trade?

The US House of Representatives has passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which could give President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries buying Russian oil and gas, including India. India is particularly exposed as Russian crude has become a major part of its oil imports since 2022. The Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi is monitoring developments and remains committed to energy security, diversified sourcing and protecting its trade interests. The bill does not automatically impose a 100 per cent tariff on India and is awaiting the president’s signature. The potential impact on Indian exports, energy sourcing, economic growth and petrol prices will depend on the final legislation and how the tariff powers are exercised.
