India, Uzbekistan Ink Long-Term Uranium Deal: How The Pact Boosts Delhi's Nuclear Ambitions

India and Uzbekistan have elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tashkent. The two countries also announced a long-term arrangement for uranium supplies, marking a significant step in energy cooperation. The agreement is expected to strengthen India’s access to natural uranium for its nuclear power programme and support efforts to expand nuclear capacity. Uzbekistan, one of the world’s leading uranium producers, would add another source to India’s existing supply network. The partnership also covers trade, investment, digital connectivity, defence and energy. The uranium deal could help India build strategic fuel reserves while reducing dependence on any single supplier amid changing geopolitical and global supply-chain conditions.
