ISRO As ‘Residual R&D Boutique’?: Staff Bodies Seek ‘Written Clarity’ On Private Space Sector Shift

For the first time since India began opening its space sector to private industry, nine employee bodies representing thousands of ISRO staff have formally raised concerns over the direction of the transition. In a joint representation to the Department of Space, they have sought clarity on ISRO’s future role in designing, developing, manufacturing and launching key vehicles including PSLV, LVM3 and SSLV. The unions have questioned reports that ISRO could eventually stop manufacturing launch vehicles and sought details on the transfer of publicly developed technology, facilities and expertise to private operators. They also warned that reduced in-house work could affect recruitment, promotions and employment opportunities. While backing India’s space ambitions and congratulating ISRO on its recent mission success, the employees have urged transparency and consultation before major policy changes become irreversible.
