Kolkata: Protest Against Demolition Drive Turns Violent In Park Circus, 3 Cops Injured

Clashes erupted between protesters and police in Kolkata’s Park Circus area on Sunday during demonstrations against the recent anti-encroachment drive in Tiljala. At least three police personnel were injured after a section of protesters allegedly resorted to stone-pelting when security forces attempted to disperse the gathering near Park Circus Seven Point Crossing. Police said the crowd had tried to block roads while protesting the bulldozer action carried out after a factory fire earlier this week that killed two people. Several roadside vehicles, including those belonging to central forces, were reportedly vandalised during the violence. Additional Commissioner of Police Ashesh Biswas said multiple arrests had been made and warned of strict action against those involved in the attack on police personnel. Heavy police deployment, route marches, and intensified patrolling were later carried out to prevent further escalation and restore normalcy in the area.
