MCD Chief, Once Transferred Over Dog Walk Row, Faces Resignation Calls After Delhi Building Collapse

Delhi’s MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar is facing renewed scrutiny after the deadly Satya Niketan building collapse that killed seven people and injured several others. Student organisations, including ABVP, have demanded his resignation, alleging failures in ensuring student safety. NSUI has also protested, raising questions over disaster preparedness and rescue management. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered the suspension of five MCD officials and a magisterial inquiry into the collapse. The building, more than 40 years old and being used as a student PG, reportedly had water accumulation in the basement while repair work was underway. Khirwar had earlier faced controversy in 2022 over allegations involving Thyagraj Stadium and walking his dog, after which he was transferred to Ladakh. He returned to Delhi earlier this year.
