‘Represented India In 3 Nations’: Former Envoy Flags ‘Trouble Establishing Citizenship’ During SIR
Former diplomat Navdeep Suri has raised concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab, sharing his experience of being asked to provide documents establishing his Indian citizenship. Suri said he submitted his Voter ID and Aadhaar card to the Booth Level Officer and was initially assured that everything was in order. He later received a message saying some details did not match the 2003 electoral roll. Since he was not in India in 2003, Suri said he was asked to provide his passport as proof. He questioned what such requirements could mean for ordinary citizens. The SIR process requires voters absent from legacy rolls to establish links through specified documents. The Supreme Court has also stressed transparency and natural justice in the exercise.
