Supreme Court Suggests Linking Unpaid Traffic Challans To Electricity Bills To Ensure Recovery

Supreme Court has stressed that simply issuing e-challans is not enough and asked authorities to find practical ways to recover unpaid traffic fines. During the hearing, Justice JB Pardiwala suggested that unpaid challans could potentially be linked to electricity dues, while also discussing measures including blocking vehicle registration renewals, ownership transfers, fitness certificates, driving licence renewals and PUC certificates. The court was told that around Rs 45,000 crore in e-challan dues are pending, with about Rs 25,000 crore recovered so far. The electricity-bill idea was only a suggestion, not a direction.
