8th Pay Commission: Salary Hike and Pension Revision Still Awaited as Commission Completes One Year

Newspoint

The 8th Central Pay Commission has completed one year since its constitution, but central government employees and pensioners are still waiting for clarity on their revised salaries, pension benefits and the expected fitment factor.

No Official Fitment Factor Announced Yet

The commission was constituted on November 3, 2025, to review the salary structure, allowances and retirement benefits of central government employees.

However, the government has not yet announced an official fitment factor or revised minimum basic salary.

Under the 7th Pay Commission, a fitment factor of 2.57 was applied, increasing the minimum basic salary from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. Employees are now expecting the 8th Pay Commission to recommend changes that could improve their monthly earnings.

Pensioners Also Await Revision

The upcoming recommendations are also important for retired government employees.

Pensioners are expecting clarity on revised basic pensions, family pensions and other retirement benefits.

However, no final pension revision formula or implementation date has been officially confirmed so far.

Recommendations Expected by 2027

The commission has been given 18 months from its constitution to submit its recommendations. This means its report is expected around May 2027, although interim recommendations may also be submitted if required.

Once the report is submitted, the government will examine its proposals and decide on the final salary structure, fitment factor and pension-related changes.

For now, central government employees and pensioners will have to wait for the commission’s recommendations and the government’s final decision.
