First batch to be discharged in January 2027

The first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme will complete its four-year tenure in January 2027. This batch comprises over 19,000 Agniveers. They were recruited on January 1, 2023, and their tenure is now nearing its end. Consequently, the government has formulated a new arrangement for their rehabilitation and employment.

25 percent of Agniveers to get permanent Army appointments

According to Ministry of Defence sources, the merit list for the 25 percent of Agniveers to be retained in the Army will be released before their tenure concludes. The examination and evaluation process for this will be conducted within the Army itself. The merit list will be prepared based on this process, and the selected Agniveers will be directly inducted into the regular cadre.

The government has also devised a separate arrangement for the 75 percent of Agniveers who will not be retained permanently in the Army. The government has already made provisions for the reservation of ex-Agniveers in several security forces. A 50% reservation will be provided for the posts of Constable and Rifleman in the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and Assam Rifles. Furthermore, provisions have been made to grant exemptions to ex-Agniveers in certain recruitment processes, such as written examinations, Physical Standard Tests (PST), and Physical Efficiency Tests (PET).

Ex-Agniveers will receive 5% horizontal reservation for Railway posts in Category-2 and above, while a 10% horizontal reservation has been provisioned for Category-1 posts.
