Bangladeshi Police Seize Bomb-Making Materials in Dhaka, One Arrested

Dhaka, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant operation following a recent explosion, police in Dhaka raided the southern Keraniganj area. This action came just days after a homemade bomb detonated near the Jatrabari police station. During the raid, officers discovered explosive materials used for bomb-making and confiscated 9,000 paper masks.One individual was arrested in connection with the case. The suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Jahid Hasan Amon, according to reports from the Dhaka Tribune. The investigation began after the September 19 explosion at the Jatrabari police station, prompting authorities to look into Amon's alleged involvement. He was apprehended on Friday in the Baghapur area. Investigators also seized various items, including five kilograms of marbles, two kilograms of one-inch nails, and 20 rolls of red cellophane tape.Additionally, police found 30 packets of elastic for masks, a blender, and a jar from the Japan brand, which were reportedly used to grind materials for creating crude bombs. The investigation into the September 19 explosion and the suspect's alleged role is ongoing. Earlier reports indicated that Bangladesh faces a broader terrorist threat, particularly from a gang led by Bomaru Mamun, a member of the newly formed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh. As of April 2026, at least 311 members of banned terrorist organizations remain at large.This figure includes 16 members of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, 185 from the original Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, 83 from Ansar Al Islam, and 16 from Harakat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh. A report from Stringer Asia suggests that these individuals represent a new generation of jihadist extremism, including operatives connected to the Islamic State and those influenced by the Afghan conflict. For years, it seemed that Bangladesh had made significant progress in addressing its jihadist issues.Security forces had dismantled networks, eliminated senior commanders, and disrupted the organizational structure responsible for the 2016 Holey Artisan Bakery attack. However, the recent bombings around Dhaka indicate that the fight against extremism may not be as decisively won as previously thought.
