A female British holidaymaker has been arrested in Benidorm after reportedly strangling to death her friend from the UK with a vacuum cleaner lead during a row.

A friend of the pair called the emergency services around midnight to beg for help. Police rushed round to the apartment where the argument is said to have taken place but it was too late and the victim was already dead by the time they arrived. The alleged killer, aged 64, is said to have confessed to the murder after she was taken away from the scene by police. Local reports said the dead woman was found with the cable still round her neck.

An initial post-mortem has confirmed she was strangled. It is not yet clear when the suspect, who has not been named, will be hauled before a judge.
