CM Vijay Secures Trust Vote as AIADMK Crisis Deepens Over Rebel MLAs in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu politics witnessed a dramatic turn after Vijay successfully won the confidence vote in the state assembly, strengthening the position of his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government. However, the trust vote has also triggered a major political storm inside All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), where internal rebellion has now escalated into a full-scale leadership crisis.
AIADMK chief and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has demanded the disqualification of 24 rebel MLAs who defied the party’s official stand and voted in support of Vijay’s government during the trust motion.
Political experts now believe the developments could push AIADMK toward another major split, potentially becoming the third major division in the party’s political history over the last four decades.
Vijay Government Wins Comfortable Majority The confidence motion was held on Wednesday in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, where Chief Minister Vijay sought to prove his majority on the floor of the House. The Vijay-led government reportedly secured support from 144 MLAs, comfortably crossing the required majority mark.
Alliance partners of TVK, including the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Indian Union Muslim League voted in favor of the government during the trust vote.
Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by M. K. Stalin reportedly staged a walkout before the voting process began.
Major Rebellion Erupts Inside AIADMKThe most shocking development emerged from inside AIADMK itself.
The 47-member AIADMK legislative group, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, had officially decided to boycott the trust vote. However, a rebel faction led by S. P. Velumani broke ranks and voted in favor of Vijay’s government.
Reports suggest that 24 MLAs from the party supported the confidence motion, while only 17 legislators voted against the government according to the official party directive.
Following the trust vote, the Palaniswami faction submitted a formal request to the Assembly Speaker seeking the disqualification of the rebel MLAs, including S. P. Velumani.
The political tension intensified further after reports claimed that C. V. Shanmugam, considered close to the rebel camp and currently serving as a Rajya Sabha MP, was suspended from the party.
The developments have now sparked speculation that AIADMK could once again split into rival factions.
AIADMK’s History Marked by Internal DivisionsTamil Nadu’s Dravidian political history has long been shaped by leadership struggles and party divisions within AIADMK.
The party itself was formed after legendary actor and politician M. G. Ramachandran parted ways with the DMK following disagreements with M. Karunanidhi after the death of C.
Following MGR’s death in 1987, the party split again between supporters of Janaki Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa. Jayalalithaa later emerged as the undisputed leader of the party.
Another major power struggle erupted after Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, when tensions grew between Edappadi K. Palaniswami and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam. Although both camps briefly reunited, the political relationship eventually collapsed once again.
The successful trust vote marks another major achievement for Vijay and TVK, whose rapid rise has transformed Tamil Nadu’s political landscape in a short period.
Following the assembly elections, Vijay managed to secure support from Congress, Left parties, IUML, and VCK, allowing his alliance to cross the majority mark and form the government.
Reports surrounding Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony also attracted attention recently.
While such details continue to generate public debate, the larger political focus remains on the growing instability within AIADMK and how the rebellion could reshape opposition politics in Tamil Nadu ahead of future elections.
