DA Hike 2026: Central Government Employees Await July DA and DR Revision

Newspoint

Central government employees and pensioners are still waiting for the next dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) revision, which is due from July 1, 2026. The government has not yet announced the revised rates, extending uncertainty for nearly 1.2 crore employees and pensioners who had expected an increase during the festive season.

The anticipated revision could raise DA and DR by three percentage points, from the current 60% to 63%. However, this increase remains unconfirmed, and the final decision rests with the Central Government.

Why Is the DA Hike Announcement Delayed?

The Centre generally revises dearness allowance and dearness relief twice a year, with changes effective from January 1 and July 1. However, the official announcement often comes after the effective date.

The previous revision was approved by the Union Cabinet on April 18, 2026. At that time, DA and DR were increased by two percentage points, from 58% to 60%, effective January 1, 2026.

According to the government’s announcement, the revision benefited approximately 50.46 lakh central government employees and 68.27 lakh pensioners. The estimated annual financial impact of the increase was ₹6,791.24 crore.

The July 2026 instalment is still pending, even though its effective date has already passed. Employee organisations have also called for an early decision. The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers previously urged the Finance Ministry to announce the pending revision, referring to inflation data relevant to the calculation.

So far, the government has not provided an official explanation for the delay or confirmed when the next revision will be announced.

Will Employees Get a DA Hike Before Diwali 2026?

The expected announcement around Dussehra did not materialise on October 21, leaving employees and pensioners waiting for further information. Attention has now turned to Diwali, which falls on November 8, 2026, and whether the government will approve the revision before the festival.

Previous announcements show that there is no fixed date for declaring DA increases. For example, the July 2025 revision was followed by a Department of Expenditure order dated October 6, 2025.

However, earlier announcement dates do not guarantee that the pending July 2026 revision will be approved before Diwali.

Current DA and DR Rates and Expected Arrears

Until the Union Cabinet approves the proposed revision and the Finance Ministry issues the necessary orders, the DA and DR rates remain at 60%.

If the anticipated three-percentage-point increase is approved with effect from July 1, 2026, eligible employees and pensioners may also become entitled to arrears for the applicable period. The actual revised rates, payment schedule and arrears arrangements will depend on the government’s final decision.

For now, central government employees and pensioners must wait for an official announcement to know whether the increase will be approved before Diwali and when the additional amount will be credited.
