India Seeks to Mediate in Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Reiterates Commitment to Peace

New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government is actively engaging with both Russia and Ukraine in an effort to mediate an end to the ongoing conflict. During a media briefing in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated its long-standing position that the resolution to the war cannot be found on the battlefield. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted External Affairs Minister Dr.S. Jaishankar's recent visits to Poland and Ukraine, where he expressed India's readiness to assist in any way to bring about an end to the fighting. Jaiswal noted that India has consistently maintained that this is not an era for war. Reports have surfaced suggesting that India is playing a mediating role between the two nations. Jaiswal confirmed this, stating, “The External Affairs Minister visited Ukraine and Poland recently. During his discussions, he emphasized that India believes this is not a time for war and that solutions cannot emerge from military conflict.” He also referenced Prime Minister Modi's remarks about the need to end endless wars.Jaiswal emphasized that it is up to the involved parties to find a way forward, but India stands ready to help if possible. The government continues to maintain dialogue with both sides, exploring ideas and suggestions that could contribute to resolving the conflict. Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war, India has advocated for dialogue and diplomacy as the means to address the crisis. At a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in 2022, Modi stated, “This is not an era for war.” During his recent trip to Poland, Jaishankar reiterated that India is in constant contact with both Ukraine and Russia.He is working on proposals that could help reduce tensions and pave the way for peace. In a joint press conference with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on September 4, Jaishankar addressed questions regarding India's potential role in easing tensions between Moscow and Kyiv. Jaishankar has expressed India's willingness to assist in resolving the long-standing dispute between the two countries. During a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, he reiterated India's readiness to help facilitate peace.On September 3, Jaishankar stated, “Just two days ago in Bishkek, Prime Minister Modi remarked that endless wars should now give way to an end to war. Every passing day of conflict means more death and destruction. It is naturally up to the involved parties to find a resolution. However, if India can help in any way, we are prepared. This was the main topic of my discussions with Minister Kuleba today.”
