Indias Automobile Sales Reach Record High in August 2026, Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge by 36.5%

New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : India's wholesale automobile sales soared to a record high in August 2026, driven by a favorable comparison to the previous year's figures and robust demand. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported this significant growth on Tuesday. According to SIAM's data, sales of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers reached unprecedented levels in August 2026.The total sales of passenger vehicles amounted to 439,309 units, reflecting a remarkable 36.5% increase compared to the same month last year. Three-wheeler sales also saw a substantial rise of 22.8%, reaching 93,764 units, while two-wheeler sales grew by 10.5% to 2,034,698 units. Rajesh Menon, the Director General of SIAM, noted that India's automobile sector is experiencing a robust growth phase. He attributed the surge in August 2026 partly to the low base from the previous year.Menon emphasized that the demand environment remains fundamentally strong, fueled by consumer confidence, the resilience of rural markets, and improved financing conditions across all vehicle categories. Looking ahead, Menon expressed optimism about the upcoming festive season, anticipating that it will further boost demand and lead to strong results in the second quarter. SIAM's figures also revealed that the total production of passenger cars, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles in August 2026 reached 3,157,822 units.In a related note, the Indian automobile industry recorded its best-ever sales performance in July, with substantial double-digit growth in the supply of passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers. According to SIAM, the supply of domestic passenger vehicles to dealers increased by 34.3% in July, rising to 457,810 units from 340,772 units in the same month last year. Additionally, two-wheeler sales jumped 22.6% to 1,923,483 units, compared to 1,569,120 units a year earlier, while three-wheeler supplies increased by 33.4%, reaching 92,560 units compared to 69,403 units in July 2025.
