Why is the Jio IPO currently in the spotlight?

The Jio Platforms IPO is significant for more than just its size; it marks the first major public share offering from the Reliance Group in nearly two decades. It provides investors with an opportunity to acquire a stake in one of India’s largest digital and telecommunications networks.

Jio entered the telecom market in 2016, offering affordable data and free voice calls. It transformed the way mobile internet is used in India and compelled established telecom companies to revise their strategies.

Subsequently, the company expanded into areas such as home broadband, enterprise technology, digital services, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI). Jio also enjoys the backing of global technology giants like Meta and Google.

According to a Reuters report, Jio Platforms had over 500 million (50 crore) subscribers at the time of its IPO launch. The company is now aiming to leverage this vast subscriber base to drive further growth through digital and technological services.

If the projected valuation is achieved, it will surpass the ₹27,870 crore IPO of Hyundai Motor India (launched in 2024) to become India’s largest public issue.

What are the price band and the minimum investment for the Jio IPO?
Jio Platforms has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share. Investors may place bids at any price within this range. The minimum application size is 12 shares, which translates to an investment of ₹12,780 at the lower end of the price band and ₹13,428 at the upper end. For larger investments, applicants must bid in specified lot multiples. The current offering includes a reservation of up to ₹2,500 crore for eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries and up to ₹500 crore for Jio employees. Additionally, employees will receive a discount of ₹54 per share on the final issue price.

What risks should investors keep in mind?

Despite a strong market position, an IPO is not entirely free of risk.

1. Regulatory risks: Telecom is a regulated sector. Changes in licensing rules, spectrum costs, and data regulations could impact the business.

2. Competition: Jio may face competition from established telecom operators as well as new technology-based services, such as satellite broadband.

3. Monetisation of the customer base: A large number of customers does not always guarantee higher earnings. The company will need to increase its revenue per user.

4. Technology spending: Significant investments will be required in AI, network upgrades, and digital infrastructure—areas where returns may take time to materialise.

5. Promoter control: Reliance Industries will retain a majority stake even after the IPO. Shareholders with smaller investments should carefully evaluate corporate governance and risks related to 'related-party' transactions.

6. Market volatility: Even a strong IPO can underperform expectations if the broader market environment is weak.

What do experts say?

Speaking to NDTV, senior trade analyst Venkat S. noted that "the Jio Platforms IPO combines a large, established telecom business with ambitions in broadband, cloud computing, enterprise technology, and AI. Its customer base, financial performance, and the backing of Reliance Industries are its greatest strengths." He further cautioned that the size of the IPO and the general excitement surrounding the listing should not be the sole basis for making an investment decision.
