Loneliness is increasing among teenagers, and they are using AI chatbots for everything from advice to emotional support. A recent study has revealed this shocking finding. According to the study, chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini are no longer just tools for teenagers to do homework. They are gradually becoming digital companions, and teenagers are increasingly relying on them for emotional support.
A study of over 5,000 teenagers
A UK youth charity conducted a survey of over 5,000 teenagers aged 11 to 18. It revealed that 2 in 5 teenagers are using AI chatbots for advice, company, or support. Teens' reliance on these tools increases as they age. More than 50 percent of 18-year-olds said they rely on AI chatbots for guidance. The survey also revealed that boys are using these chatbots more than girls.
Teenagers are seeking emotional support from machines.
Researchers found that teenagers aren't just using chatbots for practical information and homework. Nearly 14 percent of those surveyed admitted to seeking help from chatbots for friendships. Similarly, 11 percent used chatbots for mental health concerns, and 12 percent because they needed someone to talk to. More than half of the teenagers surveyed admitted that they were using chatbots for advice on dealing with daily life problems and stress. The survey revealed that teenagers are using AI chatbots to overcome their loneliness, but the American Psychological Association has warned children and teenagers that AI chatbots can make them more lonely.
