NIA Summons TMC MLA Sabina Yasmin Over Attack on Judicial Officials in West Bengal

Malda, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has summoned Sabina Yasmin, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from the Sujapur constituency in Malda, for questioning about an attack on judicial officials. This incident occurred during a Special Intensive Review (SIR) process earlier this year, ahead of the assembly elections.The attack took place in April in Mothabari, located in the Kaliachak-II block of Malda district. Judicial officials, engaged in legal proceedings at the local Block Development Officer's office, were held hostage by a violent mob for several hours. Protesters also blocked National Highway-12, leading to significant unrest. When attempts were made to rescue the judges, their vehicles came under attack, and police had to intervene to ensure their safety. Following the assault on judicial officials, the then-state government of West Bengal, led by TMC, faced widespread criticism.Some factions within the TMC attempted to downplay the incident, suggesting it was an outburst of anger from individuals whose names had been removed during the SIR process. The NIA has taken over the investigation, having previously summoned Yasmin's husband, Mahboob Alam, for questioning. A total of 12 cases have been registered concerning the Mothabari incident. The NIA has already filed two charge sheets, one comprising 54 pages and the other 11 pages, naming 23 individuals as accused.The charges against them include various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 2023, including attempted murder, assault on government officials, harassment, obstructing a public servant from performing their duty, illegal confinement, and other serious offenses.
