Popular high street shop to close down after 158 years as huge sale launched
A popular department store in Essex is closing down after 158 years. Quadrant Department Stores, which has two branches located in Chelmsford's Moulsham Street and George Yard Shopping Centre in Braintree will soon be closing their doors permanently. The stores, owned by Chelmsford Star Co-operative, will be closing in late October. Quadrant has long been known for its wide range of home goods, fashion, and furniture, offering everything from beds and dining sets to clothing and small appliances.
Chelmsford Star Co-operative said that the store closures are due to "long-term and increasing financial losses", and neither of the stores have made a profit since 2008. Before shutting down for good, however, both stores will host a huge closing down sale, offering customers a final chance to grab bargains.
Shoppers can look forward to huge savings, including up to 70% off fashion, 40% off furniture, and 25% off homewares.
The closing down sale will start at 10am on Thursday October 2 and both stores will be closed from September 29 to October 1 to prepare for the big closing down sale.
The Chelmsford Star Co-operative website reads: "Thank you for shopping in Quadrant Department Stores for all these years...
"After 158 incredible years serving the people of Essex, Quadrant Department Stores will soon be closing our doors forever.
"Before we say goodbye, come and join us to be a part of this very special final chapter."
The website added: "This is your final opportunity to shop at the UK's last remaining co-op department stores.
"Enjoy major discounts on your favourite brands across every department - from fashion and furniture to beds, small electricals, and housewares.
"So mark your calendar, spread the word, and come join us one last time."
The website also warns that no new orders on furniture, beds and flooring are being accepted after September 27, 2025.
No refunds are possible after this date either, unless the item is faulty.
