Punjab Prepares for Men's Asian Champions Trophy to Boost Hockey
The upcoming Men's Asian Champions Trophy presents an excellent chance for the Punjab government to advocate for hosting more international hockey events in the future.
This tournament marks the end of Punjab's prolonged wait to host international hockey, and the government is determined to ensure its success.
A budget of Rs 25.40 crore has been allocated by the Punjab government for the tournament, with Rs 22.96 crore earmarked for the two venues. Specifically, Rs 14 crore will be invested in the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium located in Jalandhar, while Rs 8.96 crore will go towards the Olympian Balbir Singh (Senior) International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated, "The Punjab Government has allocated Rs 25.40 crore to ensure the championship's success, and the entire government apparatus will fully support it. To engage young fans and hockey enthusiasts, all matches will be free of charge."
In a move that could further enhance the sport's profile in Punjab, Hockey India is considering establishing a centre of excellence in the state. Hockey India secretary Bhola Nath Singh mentioned, "If the Punjab government gives the green light, we would be pleased to set up a centre of excellence here. The state has a rich sporting culture, allocates a substantial budget for sports, and has Olympians involved in the system. Therefore, if they are interested, Hockey India has no objections to this initiative."
