Bengaluru — a city better known for producing software engineers and startup founders — also helped shape one of the most remarkable hedge fund success stories in recent years. US-born Mala Gaonkar, who spent much of her childhood in India’s Silicon Valley, has gone on to build one of the fastest-growing hedge funds in modern financial history.

Her firm, SurgoCap Partners, has tripled its assets to nearly $6 billion within just three years of beginning trading, a rare feat in an industry where new funds typically struggle to attract capital at scale.
