Sandeshkhali Constituency Analysis: Voters, Candidates and Results

The Sandeshkhali Constituency is one of the rural seats of 294 assembly seats of West Bengal . The seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribe and it falls under Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency. The RG Kar rape and murder case and 2024 women led protest has emerged to be one of the significant factors deciding the political landscape of this constituency. The opposition, BJP is using the protest of 2024 against the ruling party, TMC and the opposition is raising questions and concerns against women safety and governance issues.

History

The constituency was set up in 1951 as a general seat and has been active in all the elections after independence. In 2008 after The Delimitation Commission's order this seat was reserved for Scheduled tribes. The order was passed in 2008, but it became effective from 2011.Since then it is one of the 16 ST reserved seats in the territory.


Demographic profile

As of 2026 the registered voters are 2,31,094. There are 1,16, 312 female voters and 1,22,255 male voters. Only 5 belong to the third gender.
Voter turnout in the previous, 2021 election was 85.88% and in 2016 it was 87.2%. In 2021 TMC candidate Sukumar Mahata defeated BJP candidate Dr Bhaskar Sardar with 39,685 votes and that was 19.52% of all the votes.
