California student Orion Greene, 16, spearheaded a seven-week blood cancer campaign in memory of his father; the team raised a record $1,234,579

Some legacies are counted in wealth or in achievement. Others are motivated by compassion, resilience and a determination to ensure no other family ever experiences the same heartbreak. For 16-year-old Orion Greene of San Rafael, Calif., his father's death became the impetus for a remarkable mission. In a record-shattering fundraising effort, the high school student rallied classmates, volunteers, family members and supporters over seven weeks, raising $1,234,579 to support blood cancer research, patient support and advocacy. His work has now won him the title of 2026 National Student Visionary of the Year from Blood Cancer Unit, states Blood Cancer United 's official report. The news report states that the campaign was a fundraising challenge and became a tribute to a father who had fought blood cancer for years and spent much of his life helping others who fought the same disease.A son’s tribute to his father Orion is a student at San Rafael High School and started the campaign in memory of his father, John Greene, who was with Blood Cancer United for many years. In the past 15 years, John has had acute myeloid leukemia (AML) several times. He had three stem cell transplants during that time, but continued to fight for blood cancer awareness and fundraising. He previously served on the organization’s board, raising more than $8 million to support patients, scientific research and advocacy initiatives. In his final months, John decided to forgo treatment and spend more time with his family. Instead of walking away from the cause, he stayed involved and helped Orion develop what would become the most successful Student Visionaries of the Year campaign in the program’s history.Transforming grief into hopeOrion didn’t allow personal loss to define the campaign, instead, he turned it into a movement that invited an entire community to contribute. The report states that during the seven-week campaign, the team – called the “Greene Goblins” – worked together on creative fundraising projects, along with other students. And one of the coolest things the campaign did was put together a custom merchandise collection based on two things John loved: playing the piano and the family’s cat, Katniss. Merchandise created by Orion’s mother, Heather Greene, was sold online and at John’s Celebration of Life, allowing friends and supporters to honor his memory while supporting the cause. It is reported that John was a respected employee at Salesforce and the campaign benefited greatly from Salesforce. In his honor, the family’s memorial gathering was enhanced by a generous contribution from the company.A family committed to the causeThe Greene family’s connection to Blood Cancer United didn't start with Orion's campaign. Over the years, they have participated in community walks, local fundraising events and even childhood bake sales to help support blood cancer patients. Orion’s older brother, Floyd Greene, had also been a member of the Student Visionaries of the Year program, continuing a family tradition of giving back. It was not a single act of generosity, but a continuation of a legacy Orion has long been committed to.Thousands of students and one missionFor the uninitiated, Student Visionaries of the Year is one of Blood Cancer United’s signature leadership programs, inspiring high school students across the United States to learn fundraising, entrepreneurship, marketing and project management skills while supporting blood cancer research and patient care. It is reported that thousands of students and volunteers participated in the 2026 campaign nationwide and while the Orion team won the top national honor, a number of other teams also had extraordinary results. Team BE-VALuable for a Cure, led by Isabella Nilio and Valentina DePaço from Villa Walsh Academy in New Jersey, raised $715,271 and finished as national runners-up. A second New Jersey team, "BC We Care," co-led by Darian Petillo and Valentina Reale, raised over $700,000 to finish a close second. Meanwhile, eighth-grader Gray Shields was named National Team Member of the Year after raising $210,122 on his own.Building future leaders, changing livesBeyond the impressive fundraising figures, the Student Visionaries of the Year program is designed to nurture leadership in young people, giving them hands-on experience in organising campaigns, engaging communities and tackling complex challenges. Participants make a difference for families affected by blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, while gaining real-world skills that extend well beyond fundraising. Sunbelt Rentals, the National Presenting Partner for the 2026 campaign season, also supported the effort to grow community participation across the country.
