China Warns Nations Against Trade Deals With US That Undermine Beijing
On Monday, China issued a strong statement declaring its firm opposition to any country entering trade agreements with the United States that would come at Beijing's expense, as reported by AFP.
This announcement follows reports from Reuters that the Trump administration is planning to persuade other nations to restrict trade with China in return for exemptions from U.S. tariffs.
Beijing cautioned that any country making deals with Washington that compromise China's interests would face “countermeasures.” It warned against prioritizing short-term gains at the expense of others' national interests.
“Appeasement will not bring peace, and compromise will not be respected,” a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce stated.
According to AFP, the ministry added, “To seek one's own temporary selfish interests at the expense of others' interests is to seek the skin of a tiger.”
China further criticized any country making such deals with the U.S., stating this approach would “ultimately fail on both ends and harm others.”
The spokesperson reinforced China’s position: “China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests. If such a situation occurs, China will never accept it and will resolutely take reciprocal countermeasures.”
US-China Tariff Tensions
China currently faces U.S. tariffs as high as 145% on numerous products, whereas other countries are generally subject to a 10% blanket tariff. In retaliation, China has imposed duties of up to 125% on American goods.
Amid the ongoing trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies, former President Donald Trump has indicated he is hesitant to further escalate tariffs, citing concerns over disrupting bilateral trade.
Trump also claimed that Chinese officials have repeatedly approached him in hopes of negotiating a deal.
