Military plane crashes near US air base in Germany's Spangdahlem, 1 injured
A military plane crashed close to a US air base in western Germany on Tuesday, according to a statement from the local district, one person was injured.
According to the district's website, "fire and emergency response teams from the Eifel District of Bitburg-Pruem were dispatched to the scene following a plane crash in the vicinity of US Air Base Spangdahlem ," adding that one person had been hurt.
It is yet to be declared whether the crashed aircraft beloned to the German or US military. The US base was not immediately open for comment, when the district forwarded the inquiries.
An F-16 fighter jet squadron with around 20 aircraft is based at Spangdahlem, according to the German news agency dpa.
The squadron is the centrepiece of the air base that supoports US Air Force and NATO missions worldwide. According to the most recent statistics, there are around 5,000 military and civilian personnel at the site, together with their families. Between 700 and 800 Germans work at the US air base as well.
