Shreyas, 3rd of 4 next-generation patrol vessels built by GRSE, launched for Navy
NEW DELHI : In a boost for the country’s multi-domain maritime operations and coastal defence , the third of four next-generation offshore patrol vessels (NGOPVs) being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) for the Indian Navy was launched in Kolkata on Saturday.
‘ Shreyas ’ was formally launched by Reyman Kochhar, wife of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, amid traditional rituals. Vice Admiral Kochhar, the chief guest at the event, congratulated the Navratna defence PSU on launching three next-generation offshore patrol vessels in approximately five months.

'Shreyas' was launched less than two months after the second vessel in the series, 'Shruti', was launched. The first vessel, 'Sanghmitra', was launched on May 20. Measuring about 113 metres in length and 14.6 metres in width, the vessels will be capable of achieving speeds of up to 23 knots and have an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 14 knots, he said.
The construction of NGOPVs is concurrently being undertaken at two shipyards — GSL, Goa and GRSE, Kolkata. These indigenously designed and built ships will augment the existing OPVs and NOPVs for multi domain operations, such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, HADR and anti-piracy missions. These ships derive their names from India’s rich heritage, with this ship being named as ‘Shreyas’, meaning ‘Best’ or ‘Most Excellent’ in Sanskrit.
The launch marks yet another significant milestone in Indian Navy’s pursuit towards indigenous shipbuilding and is in consonance with govt’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India ’ initiatives.
