Video Captures Helicopter Crash Into New York's Hudson River, Killing Six, Including Three Children
In a devastating incident that has left both locals and international visitors in shock, a helicopter carrying a Spanish family on a sightseeing trip plunged into the Hudson River near Jersey City, New Jersey, on Thursday, killing all six onboard.
The crash involved a Bell 206 helicopter and resulted in the loss of an entire family - three children and their parents - along with the pilot. Among the victims was Agustin Escobar, a senior executive at Siemens, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their children.
The helicopter had departed from Manhattan’s downtown Skyport at approximately 3 pm. According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, it followed a typical tourist route: flying south, then looping up the west side of Manhattan toward the George Washington Bridge. But as it turned back toward the heliport, disaster struck.
"NYPD divers pulled four people from the crash site, and FDNY divers recovered an additional two. Immediate lifesaving measures were undertaken on the vessels at the scene, as well as the adjoining pier," Commissioner Tisch confirmed.
"Four victims were pronounced dead on scene, and two more were removed to local area hospitals, where, sadly, both succumbed to their injuries," she added.
Eyewitnesses described a horrifying sequence of events. One observer, a restaurant hostess in Hoboken, reported seeing the helicopter spiraling out of control with "a bunch of smoke coming out" before it plunged into the river. Another onlooker told AFP that the rotor blade appeared to "shatter in the sky" before the helicopter spiraled and fell.
Aviation attorney and former Marine Corps pilot Justin Green suggested that the footage pointed to a catastrophic mechanical failure. He explained that if the helicopter's main rotors had struck the tail boom, it could have caused the aircraft to disintegrate mid-air and plunge without control.
“There's no indication they had any control over the craft. No pilot could have prevented that accident once they lost the lifts. It's like a rock falling to the ground. It's heartbreaking," he stated.
