WhatsApp To Offer Usernames For Enhanced Account Identification

NEW DELHI: WhatsApp , owned by Meta , is said to be working on an upcoming feature called ‘WhatsApp usernames,’ which will allow users to select distinct usernames for their accounts.

According to WABetaInfo , this new feature will enable users to choose a memorable and unique username instead of relying solely on phone numbers to identify contacts.

Additionally, the company may offer users the ability to connect with others by entering a username directly within the app, without needing to know their phone numbers.

The report further suggests that WhatsApp is developing a dedicated section within the app settings, specifically within WhatsApp Settings > Profile , to introduce this feature.

By providing the option to select a username, WhatsApp aims to enhance account privacy for its users, adding an extra layer of protection.

Currently, the WhatsApp username feature is still in the development phase and is expected to be released to beta testers in a future app update.

Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new feature that allows billions of WhatsApp users to edit a sent message within 15 minutes of sending it.

This feature is gradually rolling out globally and will be available to all users in the upcoming weeks. To make edits, users can simply long-press on a sent message and select ‘Edit’ from the menu within 15 minutes of sending it.
