The living room is often the heart of the home, where families gather, guests are entertained and good energy is said to flow. Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian architectural science. It talks about the placement of furniture, electronics, décor and other daily amenities that can impact the flow of energy. It can bring harmony and prosperity to the home.

Front doorVastu experts suggest that, if possible, the main entrance to the living room should be in the north, east or northeast direction. Traditionally, these directions are connected with positive energy , abundance and new opportunities. Make sure the entrance is clear and well lit to help make it a welcoming atmosphere.

Seating and sofa arrangementHeavy furniture such as sofas and recliners should be put in the southwest or west part of the living room. Another belief is that family members should sit facing north or east when interacting with each other, as it encourages positive communication and harmony.

According to Vastu experts, the north-west section is related to movement and socialising and this is where guests can be seated.


Department of entertainment and TVThe ideal position for a living room is in the south east direction of the house, where you can place electronic appliances like televisions, music systems and gaming consoles. The direction South East is ruled by the element Fire. Hence, according to Vastu, this is the best direction for electrical appliances.

The television should not be kept in the north-east corner as it is a zone of spirituality.


Prayer cornerVastu recommends a small prayer room in the living room in the north-east corner. Ideally, the idols or images of the deities should be placed facing west, in order that the devotees pray facing east, which is considered auspicious in Hindu traditions.

Prayer room should be a calm and serene place, free from clutter and electronic distractions.


Indoor plantsGreen plants are known for their freshness and good vibes. According to Vastu, the healthy indoor plants should be kept in the east or north direction of the living room. Soft rounded leafed plants are usually preferred and prickly plants and cacti are not usually encouraged inside.

LightingMirrors are often recommended for making a room appear larger and for bringing in positive energy and should be placed on the north or east walls. Vastu consultants do not suggest keeping a mirror right in front of the main door or reflecting the mess.


AquariumMany Vastu believers consider a well maintained aquarium with healthy fish as a sign of luck. It is generally in north east or north direction. It is believed to bring good fortune, peace and the smooth flow of good energy.

Decorative ItemsIf it is the sitting room, opt for paintings that show nature, sunrise, running rivers, blooming flowers or happy family moments. According to Vastu experts, it is best to avoid displaying artwork that portrays violence, loneliness, grief or conflict as they are believed to affect the emotional environment of the house.
