Alternative Fuel Cars Close in on Petrol Models as Buyer Preferences Shift, Says FADA
India's passenger vehicle market is undergoing a significant transformation, with alternative fuel vehicles rapidly catching up to petrol-powered cars. According to the latest retail sales data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) for July 2026, vehicles powered by CNG, hybrid, and electric technologies now account for nearly the same share of the market as petrol models.
Alternative fuel vehicles captured 40.59%
Among non-petrol options, CNG vehicles remained the most popular, contributing 24.67%
The figures indicate that buyers are increasingly exploring fuel-efficient and lower-emission alternatives alongside conventional petrol-powered cars.
Auto Retail Market Records Best-Ever July PerformanceIndia's overall auto retail market recorded its strongest July on record, with 2,591,138 vehicles
For the first time, all six major vehicle categories achieved their best-ever July sales:
-
Two-wheelers: 1,818,289 units, up 28.25% year-on-year.
-
Passenger vehicles: 416,555 units, crossing the 400,000-unit mark for the first time in July.
-
Commercial vehicles: 99,666 units.
-
Three-wheelers, tractors, and construction equipment also posted healthy growth during the month.
According to FADA, the strong performance is the result of multiple factors rather than a single trigger. Lower vehicle prices following GST 2.0 changes, easier access to financing, and favorable market conditions have encouraged buyers to make purchases.
Dealers Expect Momentum to ContinueDealer sentiment remains positive heading into August.
-
74.30% of dealers expect sales to increase.
-
22.90% believe the market will remain stable.
-
Only 2.80% anticipate a decline.
Upcoming festivals such as Independence Day, Onam, and Raksha Bandhan
FADA expects the positive trend to continue through the August–October period, with 87.85% of dealers forecasting higher sales during the festive season.
Despite the possibility that this year's growth appears stronger because of a relatively weaker base last year, India's auto retail sector has already recorded 18.27% growth during the first four months of FY2027
The gap between petrol-powered and alternative fuel vehicles is shrinking rapidly, reflecting changing consumer preferences and the growing acceptance of CNG, hybrid, and electric models. Combined with strong retail demand and optimistic dealer sentiment, the latest FADA data points to sustained momentum for India's automobile market in the months ahead.
