Facebook and Instagram down? Users report widespread login and account access issues
New Delhi: Thousands of Facebook users experienced difficulties accessing their accounts early Sunday and Monday after the social media platform suffered a widespread technical outage.
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, reports of the disruption began increasing around 3:25 a.m. ET, with most complaints coming from users in the United States.
Many users were unable to log in and instead saw an error message stating: "Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes."
Some users also reported receiving temporary account restriction or suspension notifications before being redirected to an error page.
Instagram users also affectedSeveral users said they faced similar issues while accessing Instagram, another platform owned by Meta. Reports of Instagram-related problems surfaced around the same time as the Facebook outage.
Website affected more than appInitial reports indicate that the disruption primarily affected Facebook's website rather than its mobile services.
According to Downdetector data:
- About 63 per cent of complaints were related to the Facebook website.
- Around 20 per cent involved mobile devices.
- Nearly 10 per cent were linked to the Facebook app.
Some users said Facebook continued to function on mobile devices while the desktop version remained inaccessible. Others shared their experiences on Reddit, with one user claiming they initially received a message stating, "You've been temporarily banned," before being redirected to a generic error page.
Meta has experienced several major service disruptions in recent years. One of the most significant outages occurred in October 2021, when Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger were unavailable worldwide for nearly six hours due to a network configuration issue. The company later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a faulty change to its network infrastructure.
