FASTag Users Alert! Your Tag Could Be Blocked If KYC Isn’t Done — Here’s The Full Process
FASTag users in India must complete the new Know Your Vehicle ( KYV ) rule or risk having their tags blocked at toll plazas. The government has made KYV compulsory to prevent misuse and support upcoming automated tolling systems.
The KYV requirement began on 31 October 2024. Banks did not enforce it widely earlier, but they are now required to deactivate FASTags that are not verified. The rule applies to both new and existing users. Officials say misuse has increased along with FASTag adoption, which has crossed 8 crore users.
Some people used tags issued for small cars on commercial trucks to avoid higher tolls. Others kept loose tags in wallets and switched between vehicles. Authorities say the practice must stop to protect the system.
What is KYV
KYV requires users to upload photos of their vehicle and its registration certificate. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) lead the enforcement. Each vehicle must have the tag permanently affixed to the windscreen.
Required uploads
FASTags without valid KYV will be deactivated automatically. Users may face penalties or be charged higher toll rates if they try to cross toll plazas without a verified tag.
Impact on users
KYV must be completed every three years. Drivers report upload failures and delays on app portals. Several users found their FASTag inactive at toll booths despite having enough balance.
Government plan
The new rule is part of the Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling model. Vehicles will move across toll lanes without stopping. To make this possible, every tag must be linked to the correct vehicle. Tags older than five years will also be replaced.
