Maruti Suzuki's Fronx Speeds To 100,000 Sales, Outpacing Grand Vitara As India's Fastest Seller
Maruti Suzuki has announced that its Fronx crossover SUV has achieved a significant milestone by selling 100,000 units since its debut in April of the previous year. The Fronx, which made its global debut at Auto Expo 2023 based on the Baleno platform, has become the fastest-selling car in India within just nine months, surpassing the sales of its larger sibling, the Grand Vitara.
Engine Options and Performance
The Fronx initially offered two engine options: a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine generating 100 hp and 147 Nm of peak torque, and a 90 hp, 1.2-litre NA petrol engine.
The turbo-petrol variant provides flexibility with a choice of 5-speed MT or 6-speed torque converter automatic, while the NA petrol engine comes with 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT transmission options. Notably, the Fronx stands out as the only Maruti Suzuki model featuring a turbo-petrol engine.
CNG Iteration and Sales Split
In July 2023, Maruti Suzuki introduced a CNG iteration of the Fronx, utilising the same 1.2-litre NA motor. In CNG mode, it delivers 77.5 hp and 98.5 Nm of peak torque. The sales split of the 100,000 units sold so far reveals that the Fronx CNG contributed significantly, accounting for 20 percent of total sales, with over 20,000 units sold.
The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol variant contributed to 5-7 percent of sales, while the majority came from the 1.2-litre MT variant. Regarding transmission options, 18-20 percent of customers opted for AMTs, with the majority preferring the conventional MT option.
Pricing and Nexa Sales Channel
Sold exclusively through Maruti Suzuki's premium vehicle chain, Nexa, the Fronx crossover starts at Rs 7.47 lakh and goes up to Rs 12.06 lakh for the top-of-the-line Zeta turbo-petrol 6AT trim. The CNG variant is priced at Rs 8.42 lakh, ex-showroom.
