No More Toll Plaza Jams: Delhi Borders to Get AI-Based Automatic Tax Collection System

Daily traffic congestion at Delhi’s border entry points may soon become a thing of the past. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) is preparing to roll out a modern, fully automated toll collection system that will eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll booths.

This new system aims to make border crossings faster, smoother, and fully contactless by using advanced digital technologies.

What Is Changing at Delhi Borders?

Under the proposed upgrade, toll plazas at 154 entry points in Delhi

will be transformed into high-tech lanes using a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system.

Instead of stopping at booths, vehicles will simply pass through while toll charges are automatically deducted.

How the New AI System Will Work

The system will rely on a combination of modern technologies, including:

Radio Frequency Identification tags
Automatic Number Plate Recognition
Artificial intelligence-based tracking
Radar and sensor-based monitoring

When a vehicle crosses a toll point:

Cameras identify the number plate

RFID tags verify the vehicle details

Toll amount is automatically deducted from the linked account

The vehicle passes without stopping or slowing down

This system is similar to FASTag, but more advanced and seamless.

Why This Move Is Important for Delhi

Several major entry points such as:

Ghazipur border
Badarpur border
Rajokri border
Delhi–Gurugram corridor

often experience long queues, especially during peak hours. These delays lead to:

Wasted travel time
Higher fuel consumption

The new system is expected to significantly reduce these issues.

Strict Action for Rule Violations

Authorities have also clarified that vehicles without RFID tags or those not properly registered may face penalties. The system will automatically detect such vehicles using ANPR cameras, and fines may be issued accordingly.

According to estimates, over 3 crore vehicles annually

pass through Delhi’s entry toll points, including private cars, taxis, and commercial vehicles. Once implemented, the system could greatly improve traffic flow for millions of commuters.
