Porsche 911 Carrera & GTS Hybrids Hit Indian Market Starting At Rs 1.99 Crores
Porsche has made a significant leap in its iconic 911 lineup by introducing the hybrid 2024 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 GTS models. After their global reveal just two days ago, these new hybrids are now available for the Indian market, with prices starting at Rs 1.99 crores for the 911 Carrera and Rs 2.75 crores for the 911 Carrera 4 GTS. The company has opened bookings for both models, which can be made online or at the nearest dealership. Deliveries are expected to begin by the end of the year.
A New Era in Performance: The Hybrid Engine
The standout feature of the 2024 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS is its newly developed 3.6-litre hybrid petrol engine. This innovative powertrain, termed the T-Hybrid petrol-electric system, combines a traditional 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with a gearbox-mounted electric motor and a 1.9 kWh lithium-ion battery. The boxer engine on its own generates an impressive 485bhp and 570Nm of torque. When combined with the hybrid system, the total output surges to 540bhp and 610Nm, showcasing a significant boost in performance.
An advanced electric exhaust gas turbocharger is a notable addition to the hybrid setup. This turbocharger employs an electric motor positioned between the compressor and turbine wheel, which rapidly accelerates the turbocharger to create boost pressure. This motor also functions as a generator, producing up to 15bhp of electric power from the exhaust gas flow. The elimination of the wastegate, which was a staple in dual turbochargers, marks a technological advancement in reducing complexity and weight.
Electric Powertrain Enhancements
Complementing the boxer engine, an additional electric motor is embedded within the eight-speed PDK gearbox. This motor provides up to 150 Nm of torque at idle speed and delivers a power boost of up to 40kW. Both electric motors draw energy from the 1.9 kWh battery pack, comparable in size and weight to a standard 12V starter battery but operating at a higher 400V. This setup ensures the hybrid system's efficient performance while maintaining the car's agility and responsiveness.
Porsche claims that the 911 GTS can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds and reach a top speed of 312 km/h. The car has also proven its prowess on the track, completing a lap of the 20.8 km Nürburgring Nordschleife 8.7 seconds faster than its predecessor.
