Volkswagen Set To Debut Budget-Friendly Electric SUV In The Indian Market

In a recent announcement, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's CEO, Piyush Arora, outlined the company's strategy to introduce an affordable electric SUV in the latter half of the decade. Despite government targets for 30% EV penetration by 2030, Arora acknowledged the slower-than-expected adoption rate in India, prompting considerations for exporting the new model to international markets.

Arora emphasised the necessity for substantial demand to justify the significant investment required for an entry-level electric vehicle (EV). The company is aligning its focus on EVs with India's favourable tax structure, highlighting the minimal 5% tax on EVs compared to the steep 43% levy on hybrids and nearly 48% on petrol cars.

With an eye on export opportunities, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is targeting Southeast Asia, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and North Africa as potential markets. Recent regulatory and safety changes in India have streamlined export processes, enhancing the company's global competitiveness.

Volkswagen Group sees India as a crucial export hub, following industry rivals Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor. Notably, the company's exports surged by over 80%, while Skoda witnessed a quadruple increase in exports in the current fiscal year.


In addition to the new affordable electric SUV, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is rigorously testing the Skoda Enyaq electric SUV for potential introduction in the Indian market, although no specific timeline was provided.
