What to Check Before Taking Delivery of Your New Car

Bringing home a new car is a special moment, but it is also the stage where a little extra attention can save you from future trouble. A proper inspection at the dealership helps you spot any issues before the car is officially handed over and registered. Once the paperwork is done, fixing problems can become more complicated.

A careful pre-delivery check does not take long, but it makes a big difference. Here is what you should look at before driving your new car home.

Start with the Exterior

Begin your inspection in natural light. Walk around the car and look closely at the paintwork. Check for scratches, dents, uneven finish, or mismatched panels. Pay attention to the bumpers, doors, roof, and boot area. Make sure all glass surfaces are clean and free from cracks or marks.

Also, inspect the headlights, tail lamps, and indicators. There should be no moisture inside and all lights should be in perfect condition.

Check Tyres and Wheels

Take a close look at the tyres. Ensure they are in good condition and match the specifications promised. Check the manufacturing date and confirm there is no visible damage. If your car has alloy wheels, inspect them for scratches or dents.

Do not forget the spare wheel. Make sure it is present along with the jack and toolkit, and that everything is in usable condition.

Inspect the Interior

Step inside and examine the cabin carefully. Check the seats, upholstery, and overall finish. Look for loose panels or poorly fitted trims. Open and close all compartments and storage areas to ensure they work smoothly.

Press every button and switch to confirm they function properly. Small issues inside the cabin are easier to fix before delivery.

Test All Electronics

Turn on the ignition and test all electronic features. This includes the infotainment system, speakers, connectivity, power windows, mirrors, sunroof, and air conditioning. Everything should respond smoothly.

Keep an eye on the instrument cluster. There should be no warning lights. Also, check all exterior lights such as headlamps, brake lights, reverse lights, and fog lamps to ensure they are working correctly.

Look Under the Bonnet

Open the bonnet and do a quick visual check. Look for any signs of leaks, loose wires, or anything unusual. Check that fluid levels are adequate and the battery looks secure.

Verify Odometer and Documents

The odometer reading should usually be under 50 km. If it is higher, ask the dealer for a clear explanation.

Match the Vehicle Identification Number with the documents. Go through the invoice, insurance papers, registration details, and warranty information to ensure everything is accurate.

Confirm Accessories and Boot Area

Make sure all accessories you were promised are included. Check the boot space for proper finishing. Confirm the presence of the spare wheel, toolkit, and boot light.
