Business Idea for Women: Start a Homemade Food Business and Earn ₹60,000 Monthly

If you are looking for a business idea for women that can be started from home with low investment, food processing and homemade product sales can be a highly profitable option. In rural belts like Jangalmahal, where fruits and vegetables are available in abundance, much of the produce often goes to waste due to limited storage and marketing facilities. Now, a new initiative is helping women transform these unused resources into a steady source of income - with the potential to earn up to ₹60,000 per month.

IIT Kharagpur’s Initiative to Empower Rural Women

To tackle the issue of wastage and unemployment, the Food Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur launched a hands-on training programme in Taldanga village under Keshiari block in Paschim Medinipur.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the Keshiari Block Krishikanti Farmers Producer Company. Its goal was simple yet powerful - make rural women financially independent by teaching them practical food processing skills.

Learn to Make Jams, Pickles, Squashes and Preserved Foods

During the workshop, participants received practical training in:

  • Preparing fruit jams, jellies and squashes
  • Making pickles using vegetables and mushrooms
  • Scientific methods of food preservation
  • Hygienic processing and attractive packaging
  • Long-term storage techniques for surplus grains

Women learned how to convert seasonal fruits such as mango, lemon and papaya into high-quality, market-ready products. Instead of letting excess produce spoil, they were trained to process and preserve it for sale in local markets.
