Delhi Lakshmi Yojana: Women to Get Rs 2,500 From September 1, But Only Rs 1,000 Is Usable
The Delhi Lakshmi Yojana is set to provide eligible women with monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 from September 1, 2026. However, beneficiaries will not be able to spend the entire amount immediately. Under the scheme, Rs 1,500 will be deposited into a recurring deposit (RD) or fixed deposit (FD), while Rs 1,000 will be credited to a CBDC wallet for eligible everyday expenses.
The Delhi government has also begun the verification process for applications. Benefit letters for eligible women are scheduled to be distributed from August 26 at an event at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium.
Rs 1,500 will go into an RD or FD: This portion will be saved on behalf of the beneficiary and will remain locked until July 31, 2029. Therefore, it cannot be withdrawn immediately for household expenses.
Rs 1,000 will go into a CBDC wallet: The remaining amount will be transferred to a Central Bank Digital Currency wallet linked to the beneficiary's bank account. This is the portion that can be used for eligible day-to-day expenses.
Beneficiaries can also choose to put the entire Rs 2,500 into an RD or FD if they would rather save the complete monthly assistance.
The Rs 1,000 CBDC component is meant to help beneficiaries meet essential daily expenses. At the same time, the Rs 1,500 RD/FD component is intended to build a financial cushion that can be accessed later.
The CBDC wallet also comes with restrictions. It cannot be used for purchases involving alcohol, tobacco, drugs, lottery tickets, gambling or betting. This ensures that the immediately available portion of the assistance is directed towards permitted expenses.
She must be a woman between 21 and 60 years of age and should be a registered voter in Delhi. Her family's annual income must not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh.
Only the eldest eligible woman in a household can receive the benefit. In addition, the applicant, her spouse or one of her parents must have been residing in Delhi for at least 10 years by the date of application.
Women who are already receiving government pensions or certain forms of financial assistance will not qualify. Income-tax payers, GST filers, government employees and public officials are also excluded.
The scheme also excludes households that have more than three living children, consume more than 2,400 units of electricity a year or own a four-wheeler.
After an application is submitted, authorities will verify the information and documents provided. Once the application is approved, the beneficiary can start receiving the financial assistance from the following month.
District-level committees have been asked to speed up the scrutiny and verification process so that eligible women can receive the benefits without unnecessary delays.
If a beneficiary is later found to be ineligible, her payments can be stopped immediately. The government may also recover financial assistance that was already disbursed, according to the applicable rules.
Applicants should therefore ensure that the information and documents submitted during registration are accurate and complete.
Payments to the CBDC wallet will stop following the beneficiary's death. However, the amount accumulated through the RD, along with applicable interest, will be transferred to the beneficiary's legal heir, subject to the scheme's rules.
