EPFO Launches Face Authentication for UAN Activation, Ends OTP and Fingerprint Issues

Newspoint
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out a major digital upgrade to make life easier for millions of Provident Fund account holders. Users often face issues such as not receiving OTPs on Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers or fingerprint mismatches during Universal Account Number (UAN) activation. To solve these hurdles, EPFO has now introduced a simple and faster solution, face authentication through the Umang app.

With this new feature, employees can activate their UAN instantly by verifying their identity through a facial scan, reducing dependence on OTPs and biometric errors.

Two Apps Required for Face Authentication

To use this facility, users need to install two official apps:
  • Umang App: A government platform that provides access to EPFO and several other public services in one place.
  • Aadhaar FaceRD App : Developed by UIDAI, this app runs in the background to verify facial identity in real time.
Both apps are available free of cost on the Google Play Store.

Step-by-Step Process to Activate UAN Using Face Authentication

Step 1: Open Umang App

Download and log in using your mobile number. New users must complete a quick registration.

Step 2: Find EPFO Services

Search for “EPFO” in the app’s search bar and open the official service page.

Go to “Employee Centric Services” and tap on the UAN activation option.

Step 4: Enter Details

Fill in your UAN, name, date of birth, and registered mobile number.

Step 5: Choose Face Authentication

On the verification screen, select the face authentication option instead of OTP.

Step 6: Complete Face Scan

The front camera will activate. Look directly into it under proper lighting and blink once for verification.

Step 7: Activation Completed

Once the system matches your face successfully, your UAN will be activated instantly. A confirmation message will appear, and a default password will be sent to your mobile number.

Key Benefits for PF Account Holders

This new system brings several practical advantages:
  • No more OTP delays: Users will no longer depend on SMS delivery or outdated mobile numbers.
  • Stronger security: Live facial verification reduces chances of fraud or unauthorized access.
  • Helpful for senior citizens: It offers relief to pensioners and older employees who often face fingerprint mismatches due to worn-out biometrics.

Important Note

For smooth verification, ensure your face is clearly visible, matches Aadhaar records, and the scanning is done in proper lighting conditions.

With this move, EPFO is making PF services more secure, faster, and far more user-friendly for millions of employees across the country.
