EPFO Launches Face Authentication for UAN Activation, Ends OTP and Fingerprint Issues

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out a major digital upgrade to make life easier for millions of Provident Fund account holders. Users often face issues such as not receiving OTPs on Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers or fingerprint mismatches during Universal Account Number (UAN) activation. To solve these hurdles, EPFO has now introduced a simple and faster solution, face authentication through the Umang app.

With this new feature, employees can activate their UAN instantly by verifying their identity through a facial scan, reducing dependence on OTPs and biometric errors.

Two Apps Required for Face Authentication

To use this facility, users need to install two official apps:
  • Umang App: A government platform that provides access to EPFO and several other public services in one place.
  • Aadhaar FaceRD App : Developed by UIDAI, this app runs in the background to verify facial identity in real time.
Both apps are available free of cost on the Google Play Store.

Step-by-Step Process to Activate UAN Using Face Authentication

Step 1: Open Umang App

Download and log in using your mobile number. New users must complete a quick registration.

Step 2: Find EPFO Services

Search for “EPFO” in the app’s search bar and open the official service page.
