GMR Group spreads wings by taking over Nagpur Airport

NEW DELHI: India's biggest private airport operator (in terms of passenger numbers) - GMR Airports - has spread its wings by taking over Nagpur's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport on Thursday. The company now has nine airports under operations or under development. These include seven airports in India and abroad, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa (Mopa), Nagpur, Bidar, Medan (Indonesia), and extends technical support for Mactan Cebu (Philippines). Additionally, it is developing two greenfield airports in Bhogapuram (Andhra Pradesh) and in Crete (Greece).

Under the 30-year concession, GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd (GNIAL) will undertake a phased modernisation and expansion programme, including development of a modern integrated terminal. This airport will over the years be expanded to have an ultimate capacity of 3 crore passengers annually.

GMR Airports chairman G B S Raju said: “The handover of Nagpur Airport marks a significant milestone in its transformation into a world-class aviation hub.... Nagpur Airport will undergo phased development to enhance its infrastructure and operational capacity. The first phase will focus on expanding the passenger terminal to accommodate 30 lakh travellers annually.... Future phases aim to elevate the airport's capacity to serve up to 3 crore passengers annually, supported by comprehensive airside infrastructure upgrades, including a new air traffic control tower. Additionally, the airport will feature a state-of-the-art cargo facility."
