The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation ( EPFO ) manages one of the most important retirement savings schemes for salaried employees in India. Through monthly contributions from employees and employers, the scheme helps build a financial cushion for the future.

Employees receive the accumulated amount at retirement, along with applicable interest. Currently, EPF and voluntary provident fund (VPF) contributions are earning an interest rate of 8.25% for the quarter, making it an important long-term savings option for many workers.

Who Can Open An EPF Account?

Employees whose basic salary and dearness allowance (DA) together are up to ₹15,000 per month are generally eligible for mandatory EPF membership. Those earning above this limit can also opt for voluntary provident fund (VPF) contributions to increase their retirement savings.

Apart from helping employees save regularly, an EPF account also provides tax benefits. Under the old tax regime, employee contributions of up to ₹1.5 lakh annually qualify for deduction under Section 80C.

Employer contributions up to 12% of salary, subject to certain limits, are eligible for tax benefits under both old and new tax regimes. However, the new tax regime currently does not offer the same deduction benefit for employee EPF contributions.

Check EPF Balance Through The Umang App

The Umang app has made it easier for EPFO members to access their account details digitally. Users can download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and sign in using their registered mobile number.

After logging in, follow these steps:
  • Search for EPFO services in the app.
  • Select ‘Employee Centric Services’.
  • Choose options related to claim tracking or account services.
  • Enter the UAN number and request an OTP.
  • Submit the OTP to access EPF-related information.
This method allows users to check their provident fund details without visiting an EPFO office.

Check PF Details Through WhatsApp Service

EPFO members can also use WhatsApp services to get assistance with common queries. By sending a message such as “Hello” to the official EPFO WhatsApp service number linked to their regional office, users can begin the conversation.

The service is designed to provide quick responses and supports communication in local languages, allowing members to access information more conveniently.

The WhatsApp facility is available round the clock and helps users resolve basic queries related to their EPF account.

Use Missed Call Facility To Check PF Balance

Employees can also check their EPF balance through the missed call facility. Members need to give a missed call from their registered mobile number to 9966044425.

The call disconnects automatically after a few rings, and there is no charge for using this service.

After the missed call, members receive details about their latest contribution and available provident fund balance through their registered mobile number.

Check EPF Balance Through SMS

Another simple way to check the EPF balance is through SMS. Members can send the message “EPFOHO UAN” from their registered mobile number to 7738299899.
